Are you curious about what kind of hardware demands
Monkey makes? Well, by today’s standards, it doesn’t take much to
make Monkey happy.
That’s for sure. Currently, I’m running Monkey on three
different computers that had no trouble loading Monkey on the first try.
No, not all of my hardware is recognized, but I can still run certain shell
programs. The following topics are covered in this section:
- minimum system requirements;
- supported hardware;
- recompiling the kernel; and
- my systems running Monkey.
Minimum System Requirements
- Intel 386SX processor
- 4MB of RAM
- 30MB (20MB + 10MB for swap file) on an IDE HDD
- 3.5" floppy drive
- VGA for X Window
- DOS file system (on a non-compressed volume)
Supported Hardware
- Intel 386SX processor or better (486, Pentium, AMD, Cyrix, IBM, etc.)
- Math coprocessor (or emulation if not present)

- VGA and SVGA pro (Cirrus, Trident, Oak, etc.)

Kernel Compilation
Monkey can be modified to fit a pc’s
specific hardware (assuming device drivers for the system are available in
kernel 2.0.30) by removing unnecessary drivers and recompiling the Linux kernel
2.0.30 source code with the Gnu C Compiler (GCC 2.7.2). Both are provided for
download in the download page. Links to
web sites that provide instructions on compiling the GNU/Linux kernel are
available in the links page.
“Whoa cowboy! Why in tarnations do I need
to recompile the kernel when it’s already up’n runnin’?” you
inquire. To be blunt, you don’t. However, rumor has it that by
recompiling the kernel one can
trim out unnecessary device drivers, which in turn increases the cpu’s efficiency. There’s also that debate on whether or not one can be a true
GNU/Linux guru if he or she hasn’t compiled the kernel yet.
